Take your spouse with you when you study in Sweden, Finland & Denmark

By Shalini Menon  Published On May 28, 2024

Take your Spouse along with you when you are going to study in Sweden, Finland and Denmark – Your Spouse can work full-time

Studying abroad with your spouse can be a rewarding experience, as many countries offer dependent visas that allow international students to bring their partners along. Countries like Sweden, Finland, and Denmark have particularly favourable policies, with spouses often able to work full-time without significant restrictions once they obtain a dependent visa. This provides financial stability and allows couples to share the study abroad journey together, avoiding the emotional toll of separation.

Spouses can also take advantage of opportunities to learn the local language, integrate into the community, and experience the welcoming societies of these Nordic nations. While specific requirements vary by country, the ability to study abroad with one’s spouse is an increasingly viable option for those seeking to combine personal and academic pursuits in an international setting.

Here are some prominent countries offer dependent student visas to international students, allowing them to study abroad with their spouses and families.

1.Sweden

Enrolling in a bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD program in Sweden typically allows the inclusion of your spouse and/or children. Dependents can apply for a residence permit along with their student visa. Spouses can work without significant restrictions in Sweden.

2.Finland

In Finland, the spouse can join you while you study and apply for a residence permit for work if desired. Family members can join you with certain requirements met, and spouses can work if they qualify for the job.

3.Denmark

Denmark offers a Student Dependent Visa, which allows the spouse to travel to Denmark. Once the student receives a student visa or work permit, the spouse can apply for a visa. The spouse can work full-time in Denmark, and there are opportunities to learn Danish through free coaching provided by Danish municipalities.

Some key advantages of studying in these Nordic countries with your spouse include

– Ability to share the study abroad experience together

– Spouse can work full-time in most cases

– Opportunities to learn the local language

– Friendly and welcoming societies

– Flexible work-life balance

Here are some requirements for a Spouse Visa in Sweden, Finland, and Denmark:

1.Sweden

In Sweden, to apply for a spouse visa ( Sambo Visa ), you need to provide various documents depending on your situation. If you are married to a person in Sweden, you must submit a marriage certificate and a document proving the marriage registration in your home country. If you lived with your Swedish partner in your home country, you need to provide a population registration certificate and proof of accommodation. If you are expecting a child, a pregnancy certificate is required. For children under 18, you need to submit their passport, birth certificate, consent from the other parent if not accompanying, and other relevant documents.

2.Finland

In Finland, the spouse of an international student can apply for a residence permit to join them. The main applicant must be a full-time student enrolled in a Finnish university. Required documents include marriage certificates, birth certificates for children, scanned passports, and proof of relationship with the main applicant.

3.Denmark

Denmark offers a Student Dependent Visa for spouses to travel to the country. To apply for a spouse visa in Denmark, you must be living in the country legally with a student visa or work permit. Documents required include marriage certificates, birth certificates for children, scanned passports, the CPR number of the main applicant, and proof of living expenses in the main applicant’s account. Spouses can work full-time in Denmark and have opportunities for language coaching.

In summary, the requirements for a spouse visa in Sweden, Finland, and Denmark typically include proof of marriage, relationship, accommodation, and other relevant documents to ensure the legitimacy of the application and the relationship. It is essential to carefully review the specific requirements and guidelines provided by the respective immigration authorities before applying for a spouse visa in these countries. However, it’s important to note that specific requirements and regulations may vary by country and program.
